This is my first "Minefield" quiz. Hopefully I got it right, but if not, my apologies in advance. Happy sporcling!

haha so sad. Awful teams like the Astros, Orioles can't even blame the fact that they have a low payroll. Who on the Astros is making money? jeez
Jun 29th, 2011 at 01:48 GMT
@domotime2 Carlos Lee pretty much.
Jun 29th, 2011 at 01:56 GMT
Look what the Rays have done with so little and what the Mets and Cubs are unable to do with so much.
Jun 29th, 2011 at 04:49 GMT
Hey the Mets just broke .500 today were not THAT bad. Were still pretty bad but not Cubs bad yet!!
Jun 29th, 2011 at 12:51 GMT
@sultanofswing: Fair enough, guess they've still got a shot. But they've got pretty much the same record as my Pirates right now, so... :P
Jun 29th, 2011 at 13:47 GMT
Comparing the Mets to the Cubs is a little harsh though. They also have $35 Million on the DL.

the mets payroll has little to do with whats on the field. They are paying boatloads to castillo and perez who aren't even on the team and david wright and johan santana missed most of the year with injury. Look at their starting 5 and lineup and their payroll is that of an average team.
Jun 29th, 2011 at 16:24 GMT
I dont know what's more pathetic, the Cubs going 103 years without winning a World Series, or the Yankees only winning once in 10 years with a $200M payroll.
Jun 29th, 2011 at 20:29 GMT
Please accept "A's".
Jun 29th, 2011 at 20:39 GMT
Gotta love them Rays. Current standings put their record at 3rd best in the AL, 7th overall in the Majors, and **th (no spoilers) in payroll. I only wish Congress could do so much with so little!
Jun 30th, 2011 at 00:35 GMT
@sinatra22: Can't accept A's, because there's a conflict with the Astros, and it is (after all) an abbreviation for the actual team name.
Jun 30th, 2011 at 02:57 GMT
I believe nothing happened when I put the reds in.
Jun 30th, 2011 at 11:35 GMT
@TheWabbler - Consider that a freebie. The situation between the Reds and Red Sox is the same I described above to sinatra for the A's and Astros, but in reverse. If I allowed it to accept Reds, then everyone who began typing Red Sox would have their game unceremoniously ended. But if I required everyone to type in Boston Red Sox, I'm sure I'd hear no end of complaints over it (despite it being explained in the game notes). And if I just left nothing to chance and made everyone type in the full team name for everyone, I'm sure there'd be even more complaints. So I erred on the side of helpfulness and required everyone to fully type in only "Cincinnati Reds" in order to make that particular wrong guess even more difficult to make. ;)

The Royals have the lowest payroll. That's no surprise. You know what is surprising? The fact that 10 years ago the Royals had the HIGHEST payroll. They splurged in the FA market and had both defending Cy Young winners on their staff. It didn't work out so well.
Jun 30th, 2011 at 18:36 GMT
I've done it twice, and gone BOOM with numbers 11 and 20. Harsh. :)
Jun 30th, 2011 at 20:57 GMT
@ClinT13: Ummmm....what????????????? That may very well be the wrongest comment I've come across in my life. You basically said: "LBJ was the 36th president. That's no surprise. You know what is surprising? The fact that he was once elected president of Uganda. He was over there investigating the loch ness monster and was assisted by Ringo Starr and Rowdy Roddy Piper. It didn't work out too well."
Jun 30th, 2011 at 22:20 GMT
@ClintT13 and @Murf1013: I had to go all the way back to 1990, but I figured out what Clint was talking about. KC hasn't been outside the bottom 10 payrolls in the league since the early 90s, but before the free agency bonanza and the vast difference in TV revenues had reared its ugly head, KC had the top payroll in the league in 1990 ($24M). Okay, maybe he was off by 11 years, but still...

Ahh man, the 'Stros got me
Jul 4th, 2011 at 05:48 GMT
Ugh... number 9, you're killing me. Got all but number 9.
Jul 4th, 2011 at 08:18 GMT
Good game, but much harder than expected! There seems to be no link between payroll and performance, who says that money is everything!
Jul 4th, 2011 at 08:33 GMT
You can't accept "A's" due to the fact that if you are trying to type "Astros", you may get the A's on accident. That is why the Reds won't make you lose, because it intervenes with the Red Sox.

Now that I kept reading the comments, I see that BlimpyBoy already said that. Glad I'm not the only good civilian now a day :)
Jul 4th, 2011 at 18:31 GMT
@dt022 - Yeah, I kinda have to, seeing as how it's my quiz. ;) ... @Rob42 - There's been a pretty good link between payroll and performance for Pirates and Royals fans lately. Though the Pirates are actually only 1.5 games out of first place at the moment (thanks mostly to a mediocre division).

How do you create a quiz like this???? This one was good.
Jul 5th, 2011 at 20:25 GMT
Thanks, @blakeshow32! I love the "minefield" format, and thought it'd really work well with this particular high/low setup. It took some work to put together - this was my first foray into using bonus answers at all, let alone setting it up to *explode* when one was guessed. Short answer - it was done with a lot of trial and error. :)
Jul 5th, 2011 at 22:36 GMT
How does one make a minefield quiz and get the first answer to change from "safe" to "boom?" after a player enters a wrong answer?
Jul 6th, 2011 at 00:16 GMT
I wish there were a better guide for it, @GeorgiaPeach. You have to set up a non-bonus answer in the first space, which is set up to reveal (as a "safe" type of answer) with absolutely ANY correct answer. That space will be used as soon as one of your bonus-type wrong answers are guessed, and the "safe" will be replaced with the incorrect answer. The way you can get that to say "BOOM" is by making "BOOM" be the primary answer to your incorrect items (with the actual incorrect item following after a slash)... which means that typing in "BOOM" isn't the best idea in a minefield quiz. :P
