I love that East Lansing is higher than State College and South Bend doesn't make the list. Go Green! Go White!

I am disgusted that Philly and ****sburgh are the top 10. who's the pennslyvania slappy that made this? Detroit should be slightly higher, for fan loyalty at least.

so was i supposed to know that "Each year the Sporting News ranks every sports city in NORTH AMERICA. The main criteria is that the city HOST AT LEAST ONE TEAM IN ONE OF THE "BIG FOUR" LEAGUES (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB) AND/OR HOST AT LEA" meant some of the cities have absolutely nothing to do with "BIG FOUR" leagues?

Yeah no where in the criteria in the list does it say that it has to have a team in the "Big Four", you kinda just made up that criteria.

The omission of Green Bay renders this list completely worthless.

@cardspartan south bend doesn't make the list because the people that live there don't care about sports, just the money they make. the real notre dame fans are rich and fly in on private jets for football games. trust me i've been there many times

I'm assuming the explanation in the title got cut off due to too many characters, fix that to say colleges are included. And I agree, if Oklahoma City makes it, Green Bay deserves to be way up there.

I don't know how this quiz got so many stars (3 right now) since the quiz is different from what the instructions say.

i don't understand the measurements Sporting News uses. Why isn't Lawrence included with Kansas City if Ann Arbor is included with Detroit? Lawrence is closer to KC than Ann Arbor to Detroit. Why is Anaheim its own market?

I don't understand how Kansas City could possibly be ahead of Seattle. They have the same pro-sports teams, but Kansas City's are both awful. And Seattle has UW, while KC has no Div I-FBS university.

Also, Portland at 32? Nashville at 12? The former has precisely one major team, the Trailblazers. The latter has the Titans, the completely irrelevant Nashville Predators, plus the powerhouse that is Vanderbilt. How could those cities be ahead of Seattle, Green Bay, and so forth?

@UTJOSH & KINGA3: Relax fellas. Clearly the description got cut off from having too many characters. It has been fixed. Sorry if that wrecked your day. Of course, if it did, you should probably try prozac or something.

I also don't understand how they combine or divide metro areas. Provo and Salt Lake City are almost 50 miles apart. College Park is 10 miles from downtown DC, and considerably closer than that to the DC border. It is closer to downtown DC than the Redskins' stadium is. Yet Provo and SLC are counted together, and College Park gets its own listing. How does that make any sense?

Green Bay at #51? Even worse is that Jacksonville is at #50. Both have one team. Which city has a higher % that is passionate about their team? Birmingham, Alabama, should be on the list. The city loves college football, much more than people in Jacksonville love the Jaguars.

...and you all do realize that this is THE SPORTING NEWS' annual list, right? Pittsburgh is #1 because when the list was done (fall '09), they had the reigning NHL & NFL champions. If you want to know more about how they arrived at their list, follow the link included in the quiz description.

You need to accept Saint Louis spelled out, not just St. Louis. Additionally, the list is garbage.

Glad to see Pittsburgh is at the top even with the Pirates draggin the burgh down. Fan loyalty could go to Pittsburgh, I suppose to. The fact that the Pirates are still in Pittsburgh is a big enough reason :p and whoever said Detroit should be at the top for fan loyalty is a bit off their rocker: The Tigers are a decent team and their attendance isn't too great and the "Hockey Town" title doesn't belong to Detroit, in 2008 (maybe 09) they didn't sellout every game, in fact they sold out few but Pittsburgh has sold out everygame for the Penguins for the past 3 years. Toronto actually should be "Hockey Town" just NOT Detroit.

@OnOnUofK, Storrs had both it's men's and women's basketball team in the Final Four, with the women winning the title and going undefeated. The football team was also ranked in the top 25, won a bowl game, and had 4 picks in the first two rounds of the NFL draft. You're a moron.

And conman, besides the Yankees and the one year run for the Giants, New York has been a pathetic sports town this entire decade.

who reads sporting news anyway? I dont...and I def wont anytime in the future. Green Bay not making it is an absolute joke, and SI ranked Madison as the best college sports town 2 years ago, I realize I am a homer. But come on. Pittsburgh being #1 is a joke as well...first off. pirates. second off watch a (rare) meaningless game at heinz, the stadium is half full

This list is terrible. I agree with everyone who said Green Bay should be on the list. Nashville being 12 makes no sense. What is State College, and how are they #48 when Seattle isn't even on the list? And I love Austin, TX, but they shouldn't be that high.

@astrosandrockets; State College is where Penn State is. And @ricestillfumbled; the Steelers have sold out every home game since 1972. Obviously even the meaningless games for them are sold out.
