Nice quiz. Most Americans will just do it from the alphabetical rhyme they learnt at a young age. As a European I sadly missed out on this. Good development of an excellent quiz :)Less time would create more of a challenge.

Thanks! I knocked one minute off the timer. Maybe another in the future, depending on results.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 12:39 GMT
For some reason, the time didn't count down. I was able to do the quiz without it.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 12:40 GMT
The white-on-white colour scheme was a nice touch - making it really tricky to found out which that forgotten one was.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 13:41 GMT
I am honestly amazed I was able to do it. Good quiz.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 14:46 GMT
Nice quiz! like @bigalsirkp said, I did it from the song. Great Idea!
Oct 11th, 2009 at 16:24 GMT
obviously, i did it without looking cuz it's more fun that way; but SPOILER: At least on a PC running Safari, all you have to do during the game in order to see what answers you have entered already is to "block" the answer spaces with your mouse.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 17:07 GMT
Damn you indiana
Oct 11th, 2009 at 17:21 GMT
I got all of them. You just need to picture the map in your head.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 18:02 GMT
@gqb: That happens sometimes, I think it's a Java malfunction rather than a bug in the quiz. Usually reloading the page fixes it.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 18:06 GMT
@ Eliot: I'm aware of that. However, since this quiz is mostly intended to be a more challenging alternative to the "official" one, I don't think many people will use that trick. And if they do, all the power to them. I did make it so the answers show up randomly, so it would still be kind of tricky.

Just highlight the page to see what you've listed...

I liked the challenge. At first, I thought it was just sans the map, so I started going up and down the country. Didn't realize until the end that the answers weren't showing up. Well done.
Oct 11th, 2009 at 22:31 GMT
@rk559 It's a quiz for fun. Cheating really gets you nowhere.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 00:35 GMT
Got em all with 2:15 left to spare....would have been quicker but I forgot New Jersey (surprise surprise LOL)
Oct 12th, 2009 at 00:38 GMT
Yeah, I can always see the map. It is fun, though. 3.13 left, too.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 00:59 GMT
@bigalsirkp: I'm an American and I never learned an alphabetical song/rhyme about the states.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 01:43 GMT
Oh darn. I forgot Ohio. I also live in Ohio.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 02:45 GMT
I actually found it oddly easier than with a map/being able to see the answers. Less opportunity to get distracted and stuck thinking about the ones you've already entered. Nice challenge!
Oct 12th, 2009 at 03:21 GMT
Like Niques - this is actually easier for me. I just do it geographically anyway. The alpha list doesn't help me at all.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 04:18 GMT
@ted: same here, I never learned any sort of alphabetical song/rhyme about the states either. I got 50/50 just by picturing a map of the US in my head and going from west-to-east
Oct 12th, 2009 at 05:06 GMT
Omg i got maryland with 10 seconds left to get to 49 and i was thinking of the last one which was maine just before the timer went out
Oct 12th, 2009 at 13:49 GMT
I decided to take off another minute. While I don't necessarily want more people to do "bad" at this quiz, I'd like it to have a bit more of a learning curve.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 17:04 GMT
for some reason, i found that this quiz was easier to do than the states quiz where they give you a map
Oct 12th, 2009 at 17:29 GMT
quite tricky (as a brit) but got the 50/50. worked west to east, although realised halfway through that i should have started with hawaii, then for some reason had tennessee left at the end and took about 30 seconds to work it out.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 17:30 GMT
Waiting for this one! But... time should be six minutes.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 20:51 GMT
**** you tennessee for ruining my perfect score
Oct 12th, 2009 at 21:47 GMT
Brutal. Still got them all, although with under 10 seconds left.
Oct 12th, 2009 at 22:46 GMT
By "without looking" I thought it just meant not having a map like the main one does. Making the answers pop up in white makes it harder....and more fun. Kudos. (I was stuck on one last one for awhile but finally got it.)
Oct 12th, 2009 at 23:27 GMT
Just missed Pennsylvania. Nice quiz.
Oct 13th, 2009 at 18:35 GMT
At first I thought the title meant "without looking at a map". I started entering in the states while looking down at my keyboard and thinking, and then after I entered about 30 of them, I looked up to see my progress and it was then when I realized what "without looking" meant here. The first 30 took me less than a minute, and the last 20 took me three times as long. I'm thinking that there is definitely a heavy psychological component of this for some people. Great quiz!
Oct 13th, 2009 at 22:00 GMT
Excellent idea for a quiz. Once I realized what was meant by "not looking" I panicked and missed a bunch that shame me. Very well done. 5 star quiz!
Oct 14th, 2009 at 18:59 GMT
really nice twist. gj.

Oct 17th, 2009 at 23:15 GMT
at first i didn't understand but when i started, i was like "ohhh" great game
Oct 17th, 2009 at 23:30 GMT
Good game...nice structure...and definitely a "D'oh!" quiz.
Oct 18th, 2009 at 12:00 GMT
Are we not meant to look at the keyboard or the screen? Good game though.
