Since the city part is understood, can we just type in the name without "city"?

I don't believe that "City" isn't part of New York's name. It's just New York. The "City" is often added colloquially to distinguish it from the state.

Csjoholm is 100% right. New York City should not be on here, the name of the city is just "New York."

Yep, NY shouldn't be on here. But Quebec City should be. Its population is over 700,000.

I like the quiz, but I think giving the country makes it too easy. Seeing Panama makes Panama City obvious - the challenge would be to get Panama City without seeing Panama there.

Quebec City's population is 491,000; the metro area is 715,000. Either way, it's big enough to make the list.

The city is just "Quebec." I belive "Quebec City" is, much like "New York City," a way to help distinguish the city from its province/state. My advice: either both should appear in the quiz, or neither should appear.

Ciudad Juárez in Mexico (population around 1.4mil according to Wikipedia) should be included, at least as a bonus answer.

First, thanks for the feedback. I tried to clear it up with "common English names," though I grant that's not very specific, so that's why there's nothing with "Ciudad" in it. The source I was using didn't list Zamboanga or General Santos (or Quebec), which is why they're not there. And while it's true that New York is technically just New York, "New York City" is certainly not an uncommon way of referring to it. Frankly this quiz's sudden popularity has caught me a bit by surprise! I will see about reworking it. Part of the problem seems to be that there's not always one accepted way of giving the city name when it's tagged with "City". And cdill's right - it was a better idea in my head than I think it turned out to be, but once I'd done the work I figured I might as well just publish it...

This is definitely a good quiz idea. It might be hard to address all the issues though (such as City vs Ciudad, New York (City), etc.) Perhaps a different source?

I've looked around but I can't seem to find another source that lists enough cities to justify making the quiz at all (if I couldn't get at least 10 there's no point). Most lists only go through the top couple hundred cities in the world and that just doesn't seem to be enough. If anyone has a good source, let me know...

New York should definitely not be on here, but then again Mexico City, Guatemala City, and Panama City shouldn't either. In English, the word "city" is added to distinguish but in reality, the names of the cities themselves are simply México, Guatemala, and Panamá just like New York.
