Before this goes public, I wanted to work out all the alternates people wanted accepted... so please feel free to comment and let me know... you basically only need the name of the school without and university of or so and so univiersity.. so just Ohio State or OSU would work if it were Buckeyes... let me know!
Oct 16th, 2009 at 15:37 GMT
love it... but for Eastern Michigan and Eastern Washington, apparently you need "university" too, which should be fixed. Don't know about others.

Love the quiz, but you missed Savannah State Tigers.
Oct 16th, 2009 at 16:27 GMT
More time would be good, 2-3 minutes more.
Oct 16th, 2009 at 16:35 GMT
fixed the errors, and found another missing team.. thanks for the feedback

do Marquette, Niagara and Cal not count because they have modifiers such as colors in their name? They are also Eagles and Bears no?
Oct 22nd, 2009 at 21:35 GMT
Typed in "winthrop" and it didn't work... also wasn't sure bout the Cal (etc.) qualifiers
Oct 23rd, 2009 at 21:44 GMT
Liked the quiz. I personally don't think initials (such as OSU) should work, but from reading feedback in other quizzes I may be in the minority. (Depending on where you live, OSU could be Ohio State, Oregon State, or Oklahoma State). Also, where I am from people usually refer to Grambling, not Grambling State, though that is the acutal name. Just a little minor input on my part. Otherwise, terrific job Ben.

I went with official nicknames, thus teams with Golden Eagles, Golden Bears do not qualify for the quiz... fixed the errors though.. thanks!

accept pitt for pittsburgh

Is there a reason Samford isn't listed for Bulldogs? As far as I know (and can tell from 30 seconds of research) they don't use any modifiers for their name.

There's a word missing from the title of this quiz. Most NCAA Nicknames makes no sense. It should be Most Common NCAA Nicknames, or something along those lines.

If only Cal wasn't the GOLDEN Bears...

For those who are wondering, it is possible to make the 96th percentile while still missing "Kentucky" for Wildcats. Oops.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:04 GMT
What about the Aggies? Texas A&M, Utah State, UC Davis, and New Mexico State all call themselves the Aggies and all play Division I basketball.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:06 GMT
Sorry, I counted wrong and didn't see the bottom all had 5. Nevermind.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:17 GMT
I missed UNI... I go to UNI *facepalm*
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:23 GMT
accept milwaukee for wisconsin-milwaukee.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:36 GMT
Teams like Cal ("Golden Bears") and Marquette ("Golden Eagles") should be bonus answers at least.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:42 GMT
I don't know if I've ever started a quiz feeling so confident and finished it feeling so humble. Great quiz. Really exercises your recall.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 17:59 GMT
I didn't do well, but I got at least one on all of them but Bears. I had Golden Bears, Black Bears, Bearcats, but couldn't think of a *!*(@ Bear to save my life...

Cal? Marquette? Maine? c'mon

great quiz.. i like it very much

I found it interesting, but not surprising, that 9 out of the top 10 team nicknames are animals. Which makes me wonder how many teams *don't* have animal names. Nice quiz, Ben. :)
Mar 9th, 2011 at 18:43 GMT
Definitely a very nice quiz, but 8 minutes is too short when 98% aren't getting even half the answers. This needs to be up in the 12-15 minute range. 4 globes (would've been 5 if longer).
Mar 9th, 2011 at 18:44 GMT
trivia, i don't feel like counting, but here is a partial list (not sure why it stops). http://college-basketball.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_Schools My personal favorites are the Centenary Gentlemen and the Campbell Fighting Camels.

.4 % of sporclers go to Houston Baptist.

^sabrefan62: That list was interesting. Lots of the non-animal names are people, but one that stood out as unique to me was the tree - the Indiana State Sycamores. Though come to think of it, tall trees/tall players - yeah, I can see that! Thanks for sharing that. :)
Mar 9th, 2011 at 21:52 GMT
here's another interesting list of nicknames- http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/ Boilermakers! (Purdue)
Mar 9th, 2011 at 22:13 GMT
Aggies should be on here. UC Davis, Texas A&M, Utah State, New Mexico State, and North Carolina A&T are all called the Aggies. That is five, and five appears to be the minimum for the quiz, seeing that Huskies, Spartans, and Rams are on here. It is ludicrous to exclude the Aggie.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 22:14 GMT
Also, I believe the Gardner-Webb is called the Bulldogs as well.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 22:35 GMT
elcrop, it's funny you bring up that nickname as it came to my mind right away when I saw the title of the quiz. Most of the NCAA nicknames are drab and predictable, but some of them are quite interesting with a nice story behind them, such as the Boilermakers, Crimson Tide, Hoyas, and Blue Demons. It's ashamed you can't see nicknames like this develop anymore since for marketing purposes, teams need to have a nickname from the get-go. I think of all the sports leagues, MLB has the most interesting history behind most of their teams nicknames.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 22:44 GMT
@GeoExpert you are right about the Aggies.. they have been added.. the Gardner-Webb team falls under the same thing as the Cal Golden Bears as they are the Runnin' Bulldogs...

You would think with a university name like "The Citadel" you could come up with a far more interesting school nickname than the Bulldogs.
Mar 9th, 2011 at 23:36 GMT
"Who are we?" "The Wildcats!" "Who are we going to beat?" "The Wildcats!"
Mar 10th, 2011 at 01:40 GMT
I guess we'll never see "Yeomen" on here. Sad...
