Sutton also had 21 straight seasons with at least 100 strikeouts.. I believe that's a record, too.

yeah, Don Sutton was very good at being good, and that's good enough for the Hall. Could not place Dennis Martinez. didn't realize he pitched for that long.

I was hoping Urban Shocker would make the list. Partly because he was one of the finest unsung pitchers of the early decades, and partly because who doesn't like typing the name Urban Shocker?

@mraithel13 - I feel for Don Sutton for the fact that he is leader in career victories for the Dodgers, one of baseball's premier teams, but he is considered what the 3rd or 4th best pitcher in the teams history. Pettitte, if he continues for a few more seasons, will be in the same boat.

Moyer's been pitching so long, his first home ballpark in the majors didn't have lights.

Oh, the magic of Sporcle. I forgot Pettitte, this Yankee fan's current favorite, while enjoying the opportunity to type in Martinez, Sutton, Moyer, Jenkins, and other remarkable workhorses whose lengthy careers made them such a pleasure to root for.Good one!

As a Braves fan it's great to see Sutton and Maddux at the top -- one of our finest announcers and one of our finest pitchers.

I found it interesting that Cy Young was not on here. Especially considering Felix Hernandez was a questionable recipient due to a lack of wins.

Young's absence is due to the "since 1901" stipulation which is in line with the "modern era" of baseball around which most baseball records are based. Young had 19 10+ win seasons in all but only nine of them were in the 20th century.

MisterPenguin: Wins a team-based stat. In all but two of Hernandez's losses, he gave up two runs or less. How is it his fault that the Mariners were one of the worst offenses of all time?

What a shame Pedro Martinez didn't make it - he broke down way too soon. Also surprised Jerry Koosman didn't make the list. On edit - he had 13 seasons with 10+ wins. Martinez had 12 seasons, and 1 with 9 wins.

Yep, mb625, I did. And can this be made to accept "Ferguson Jenkins" as a correct answer? I did lousy enough without being punished for using a full name. Thanks!

joneli24: I understand that, thanks. It's just that if I type in the full name, for whatever dumb reason, and it doesn't work, my usual conclusion is that I'm wrong, not that there's a variation of the name that will work.

I was surprised by no Whitey Ford. I figured someone from the 1950s Yankees powerhouse would have been on here.

mustango, thank you for explaining the absence of Cy Young. Embarrassing on my part. Docked myself two points. @floydpink, I am a bit confused as to where you got the impression that I thought King Felix did not deserve the Cy Young. As a Mariners fan, I in no way was trying to imply that. My apologies, for being unclear.

Mathewson and Ford both had relatively short careers. If I recall correctly, Mathewson's career was cut short by World War I, and Ford lost 1951-1952 to the service. Ted Lyons (whom I missed) is probably the best pitcher nobody's heard of - won most of those games for bad White Sox teams.

Correction. Mathewson was fading by age 34; he may have been similar to Pedro Martinez in that regard. He did get exposed to poison gas during training for World War I, and this most likely shortened his life (see baseball-reference.com for details), but the war did not shorten his career.

@EatMorePossum - Andy Pettitte (who is on the list) has within a few wins as Whitey Ford. I believe Pettitte is a few ahead but due to his 3 year hiatus in Houston, Ford holds the Yankees lead. However, a lot of times Ford would be held back to make the "big game" starts which over time I guess would just take away decisions/games from him to win

I was most surprised by Mathewson's absence, but then I looked and he had only 14 seasons with 10 wins. ...However, he had 361 wins in those 14 seasons, or an average of 26 per year.

Dralcoffin, Ford was a good guess (he had 13 seasons), but the '50s Yankees didn't have any consistently great starters after him. Reynolds, Raschi, and Lopat were all very good but done by around '53. After that, the Yankees would find journeymen who would give them a couple good years, then replace them with others.

When I looked at public polls, and read articles about who deserved the AL Cy Young it appeared that many people questioned the number of wins that Felix had, and was hence a questionable recipient (at least that would be my understanding). That was not my personal belief.
