These are metros. I was trying to figure out how Boston is larger than LA when I friguing walked from through half of it in an hour on Christmas. Boston is only 232 sq km. While LA's city limits is 1,290.

Essen & Dusseldorf are 2 different cities... Its like saying Oakland/San Fran

Yes, they are not the same city, but this is not the largest cities by area, this is the largest metro areas by area, and essen and dusseldorf are considered to be in the same metro area.
