Portugal appears twice and Tunis should be Tunisia.

I was missing one for ages, and ended up with 32/33. I saw that I'd got the UK wrong... Gibraltar! Argh...! Crafty use of the 'control territory' in the title!

Yep, Gibraltar's the tricky one in there, but the "control territory" clause helped me get away with it. Mind you, even without Spain, having Akrotiri and Dhekelia let's me get away with using the UK.

I don't really like the "control territory" business. I'd rather allow dependent territories to be their own answers and allow Gibraltar and the Cypriot territories to be their own answers. Are you sure, btw, that no parts of Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan or India were included within the Caliphate?

There might be a little bit, but I tried to look closely and make sure that I they didn't include any. I could be wrong, but I hope not.

I know old wiki isn't that reliable, but they have a lovely map showing the Umayyad Caliphate over a current world map. It suggests that it covered parts of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, India, Mauritania and possibly a very small part of Niger. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Age-of-caliphs.png
