| I don't agree with Chunklets about Alexander the Great's nationality. Greece had, at that time, never been unified under a single city-state. They recognized outsiders only as xenoi (strangers to the city) and barbaroi ("babblers," people who didn't speak a Greek language). The Macedonians spoke a Greek language and would therefore be xenoi. Although it is true that Greeks from the Peloponnese and Attica viewed the Macedonians as a bit more alien than most other Greeks, they were nevertheless distinguished from barbaroi like the Persians, Scythians, and Egyptians. |
