Hah! The original link in the Guardian now also links to the Sporcle quiz on the 100 most common English words!
Hey
anonymous
, can you add the word count from the article? It ranges from 2262 for the #1 word to 87 repetitions of the #100 word.

Very fun, but I wonder; did they count "na" as a word? Because considering Hey Jude that oughtta have at least, I dunno, a kajillion entries.

If only "love" were on the "Commonest English Words" list, the world would be a much better place. I think we can admire the Beatles for that. Great quiz, expect this to be published very soon.

Wow, let me just say, thank you all for your positive comments! I didn’t expect over a thousand plays and an Editor’s Pick so quickly! Since the people at the Guardian worked hard counting every single word, I’ve decided to include “9” and “na” as bonus answers. I’d like to thank you once again, and I hope I’ve past the audition.

English is not my native language, so I don't know how this is handled usually, but aren't phrases like "it's", "don't", etc. technically two words?

@pdu - nope, they're special words called contractions...they count as single words.

@pdu: Words like It's, I'd, you're, we're are contractions and usually considered as a single word in both spoken and written English. Other languages use two or more words combined words that do not use or have lost the use of the apostrophe 'bonjour', 'aufwiedersehen', etc.
