Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics [four stanzas] to "The Star Spangled Banner" in 1814, inspired by a bombardment he witnessed at a harbor near Baltimore, Maryland during the War of 1812. The melody of the anthem is from an olde English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven". A fifth stanza was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1861 during the American Civil War.
