| @emma2323: Tibet was considered a de facto sovereign nation from 1912-1951, but that begs the question of whose dominion was it under in 1900 if it was not independent. The answer was technically China, ruled by the Qing dynasty, but by 1900 (during the Boxer rebellion), Qing control over Tibet was minimal. An example of this minimal control was that the British-Chinese trade and border agreements concerning Tibet, entered into in 1893, were rejected by the Tibetans, who refused to negotiate with the British. This led to the British invasion of Tibet in 1903. By 1906-07, Britain recognized China's suzerainty over Tibet, but when the Qing Dynasty was deposed in 1911-12, Tibet asserted its full idependence. |
