Good quiz, but the title is a little ambiguous. I assumed it meant the top 50 metro areas among the metro areas without teams, not just the metro areas among the top 50 without teams.

@swellwrench - Good point, although I'm not sure there's much I can do about that now. @sc00 - I tend to agree. I'll cut a couple minutes off.

Isn't San Bernadino sufficient? I typed Virginia Beach and it gave it to me I would think that to be consistent either Riverside or San Bernadino should be accepted. Good quiz!!!

Albuquerque?

@mysecondaccount - Albuquerque is the 59th biggest metro area, so it doesn't make the list, I'm afraid.

MLS isn't a major sport by Sporcle quiz (or anyone else's for that matter) standards...you ought to either remove it or add the WNBA which is just as popular (in this case it doesn't affect the actual quiz, just the info).

@Antithesys- Actually adding the WNBA may affect the quiz because there's a team called the Connecticut Sun, but hey if Alasdair wants to include MLS, who cares?

I got Riverside/San Bernardino by putting in like 12 spaces and no letters. That aside, YEAH VIRGINIA!! Only state with two cities in the top 50 and no sports teams. So proud to be a Virginian.

Tried it again, this time I got Riverside/San Bernardino AND Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Newport News with only spaces.

I am assuming adding MLS eliminates only Columbus, OH from this list.

Columbus Blue Jackets. MLS eliminates no metro areas, so people complaining is retarded. (Although if we are talking states, it does eliminate Kansas)

El Paso?

El Paso is only 68th. Also, regarding the inclusion of MLS in the title, I'm actually not much of a soccer fan, but I think the league has a legit claim as being the fifth major sport, and since their inclusion doesn't affect the answers at all, I figured there was no harm in including them.

The NHL has virtually no presence at all in large sectors of the US, and is not particularly popular in most areas. MLS belongs at least on that level.

I agree with LinuxLinus, those who compare the popularity of MLS to the WNBA are way out of touch. MLS is much closer to NHL than it is to WNBA it is not even a discussion.

Providence's metro area reaches into Massachusetts and I think that Foxborough (New England Patriots) falls within that area. Foxborough is definitely closer (driving distance) to Providence than it is to Boston. In short, I don't think Providence should be an answer.

@paulvc - You make an interesting point, but I think since the Patriots are implicitly a Boston sports team (considering their prior history as the Boston Patriots until 1971) they can't be considered a Providence team. I'll admit it's borderline though.

Not sure how I missed that, but as a person who lives in New England paulvc is 100% right. When my friends fly up from Texas for games at Foxboro they always fly to Providence because it is closer. While the argument can be made that the "New England" Patriots serve all of New England (which would include Hartford in this quiz too), I would say that it would be more accurate to say it is a Boston/Providence team. Citing the Boston Patriots does not make sense, since they changed their named when they moved out of Boston.

As a Virginian, this quiz saddens me. Please accept "Hampton Roads" for Norfolk/Va Beach/Newport News, etc. That area is always referred to as Norfolk, even though it's not even the largest (area wise and population wise) of the 7 cities.

lol NHL is so much bigger than MLS. Soccer should stay where it belongs...overseas.

Thanks for including the MLS, for it is 90 minutes of no time out, limited subs, constant running, teamwork, sport. For those wanting it to stay overseas, well, I've yet to see American football as an Olympic sport or see its world cup event.

Well, Virginia Beach is a fake city that was created to prevent Norfolk from annexing its suburbs. It's a shame the census goes along with such legal posturing: the real city's obviously called Norfolk. And I'm surprised Riverside is the least guessed, not the most guessed: it's almost a running joke in census stats.

I was going to say something about Honolulu, but then I realized that it's only the 57th metro area even if it is number 50 in cities alone. Good job.
