I would recommend also accepting Zaire for Congo DR as that was the name of the country at the time they participated in the World Cup. Same with Dutch East Indies for Indonesia for the same reason.

It's pretty standard to accept DRC for Congo as well (at least, on sporcle). I don't know if you're the first, but great quiz idea!

Probably best to accept country names only as they were at the time (unless the entire country changed names, Zaire-style). For example, why do all of USSR's appearances only count for Russia, not Estonia, Kazakhstan etc, but Czechoslovakia's appearances cound for both Czech Republic AND Slovakia? Same with Yugoslavia's (and Serbia and Montenegro's) appearances only counting for Serbia, but not Croatia, Slovenia et al.

@Shayxin they are counted like that because that is how FIFA has decided they should. It is an official decision to do so.

Crap, after typing "Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England", I confidently moved on to the rest of Europe, smugly congratulating myself for avoiding "UK" and going for its subnations. Guess which was the only blank space missing when the time ran out...

I agree with Shayxin. Because of this logic I assumed West and East Germany were included in Germany and didn't even bother typing East Germany despite knowing they were two completely different teams. Otherwise good quiz.

Me too, I tried West Germany first, so didn't follow up with East Germany. Enjoyed the quiz though.

Pretty damn good for a first quiz. The accepting of Serbia only for Yugoslavia etc etc was slightly confusing but apparently its official so meh. i liked it anyway

Excellent idea, reckon it would be more challenging if it were looking for the names that they were at the time. eg, asking for Zaire, not DRC. Asking for West Germany, not just Germany.

damn it's really been awhile since i've come back to this quiz thanks for all the comments (both positive and negative) lpw - yes, i am American for the country names, I followed exactly how FIFA recognizes them, hence typing in 'Czechoslovakia' brings up both the Czech Republic AND Slovakia, yet Serbia shares the history of just Yugoslavia (and not any of the other former Yugoslav republics, like Slovenia or Croatia)
