I've omitted some countries where the origin is debated. I tried to add them as bonus answers, but it didn't want to work. I also included two nations named after old Portuguese names for rivers (they're both pretty guessable). Say if you think any countries should be added/removed!

Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo?

According to the source, they're named after the Kongo kingdom. Perhaps the river was also named after that, but they don't seem to be named after the river itself.

I accept it, although it sounds strange to me that two countries have the same name as a major river and there's no connection between them.

If I understand him correctly, he's not saying that there's no connection, he's saying both of the countries and the river were named after the same thing (Kongo Kingdom), but the countries weren't named after the river.

I'd be inclined to add the Congos as bonus answers. I tried them, and when they didn't work I was pretty frustrated and almost gave up on the quiz.

Agree with jonnyr12 re adding the Congos as bonuses, with explanations. Also possibly Transnistria for a bonus? - only recognised as a nation by a few other countries, but definitely named after a river!

Okay, I've added the Congos as bonuses (I meant to before, but the bonuses weren't working for some reason). There's 5 bonuses in total though, see if you can find the others!

Make that 6 bonuses. Good shout, trout.

Huh, I've never made the connection between Zambia and the Zambezi. Interesting.

Apollo: I get it. Still, I find it hard to believe that in Africa (or anywhere else in the world), a major river was named after a country (Kongo Kingdom) and not the other way round. Sounds strange to me.

Argentina and Rio de la Plata? It's a bit strange, but "plata" is silver in Spanish and "argentum" is Latin for silver, so they clearly have a shared root at least.

Cool quiz! If you expanded this to include all bodies of water instead of just likes, you could add Malawi, Chad, and Nicaragua.
