Was the "unus nauta" mnemonic an invention of Frederic Wheelock, or does it pre-date him? I've always assumed that it did come from Wheelock, but I suddenly wonder if doesn't go way back, perhaps even to the Medieval era or earlier.

What a strange brain meltdown. I saw unus nauta and immediately thought this was a mnemonic for first declension masculine. I completely froze! Well done.

i kept trying to type the genetive singular ("why aren't unius, ullius, nullius working?!").
