Great idea for a quiz! Tanais is actually in Russia (modern Rostov), but Theodosia for instance is in Ukraine ( http://www.utexas.edu/courses/greeksahoy!/overall_metropoleis.jpg ) and you can also maybe add Al Mina (Syria), Epidauros (Croatia) and Olokenion (Montenegro) from different sources. It could also be interesting to only list colonies which still exist and their modern names.

There are definitely Greek settlements in Romania, Istros being the most famous. The source you have only seems to name the biggest ones. If I were you, I'd look at some other sources and expand the quiz (I know it only lets you name one source, but you can always list others in a comment.) Good quiz!

Thanks, I've added some others. I didn't think of the ones in Syria or further east in Asia; I was thinking of the pre-classical colonies from about the 9th to the 6th centuries BC, although I suppose all the Alexandrian and Hellenistic ones are kind of colonies too. It would make for a much longer quiz if I added all those.

Is it sad that I got Greece last, and guessed about 5 or 6 countries before I guessed it?

Great quiz! It was proving much more difficult than I'd anticipated, until I remembered the existence of the Black Sea... :)

Greece definitely colonized Macedonia. Even if you exclude the Macedonians as non-Greeks (which is questioned in modern times, as genetic evidence shows they are and linguistic evidence seems to back it up), the Kingdom of Lynkestis was within their borders, and was settled by Greeks Also, Monaco was settled by Greeks

I just had an exam and was marked incorrectly for saying that the ancient Greeks had colonies in France. I shall show my teacher this quiz and see what happens.

Don't forget Tajikistan! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria_Eschate (and Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and Lebanon if you consider Tripoli to be a new city as opposed to a continuation of the Phoenician one.)

@Akrites: Those cities were not colonies. They were founded as military outposts in territories conquered by Alexander the Great.

How can Greece be a Greek colony - definition of a colony - a body of people who settle far from home but maintain ties with their homeland

@sirperceval: It doesn't say that all of Greece was a Greek colony - just the city-state of Abdera and the island of Corcyra (Corfu).

An interesting quiz, but there are many more modern countries where Greek colonies were located including: Afghanistan (Alexandria on the Oxus); Iraq (Laodicea & Apamea); Iran (Laodicea in Media & Apamea); Israel (Arsuf); Jordan (Abila); Kuwait (Fylakio); Lebanon (Laodicea in Phoenicia); Montenegro (Budoa); Pakistan (Alexandria on the Indus, Alexandria of the Caucasus & Alexandria Bucephalous); Slovenia (Aegido); Syria (Laodicea ad Libanum & Apamea);Tajikistan (Alexandria Eschate). I also understand that there were Greek colonies in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia & Herzegovina; Serbia and Armenia and I am certain a number of other countries.

Malta? I'm better with history than geography but I was pretty sure that prior to Phoenician rule, Malta was part of 7th century bce Magna Graecia.

I have to agree that the source is pretty incomplete. For instance, the Decapolis (which pops up in the New Testament a great deal) is missing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decapolis

@Sarahbelle: You are indeed correct. Malta was part of Magna Graecia during the 7th Century BC. Malta should be added to the answers.

Hmm, didn't think this one would get published. It could have used some more work, but instead, we could think of it as "where were these particular colonies", not necessarily "name all the countries". I think I mentioned earlier that I didn't include Hellenistic military colonies, just the pre-classical and classical trade colonies and settlements.
