Interesting that so many of the islands he visited are still under the rule of a country in Europe (UK, France, Spain, Portugal), the American mainland (Hawaii, Easter Island), Australia or New Zealand rather than independent.

Re: bonus answers, how could Cook have visited something after his death?

His ships went there on the way back to Britain, after he died...it's just oddly worded. I'll fix it.

Please accept USA. I know you accept US but I typed it too fast and didn't get credit.

@peckerpie, nothing against you, but I don't understand why people are upset about the "US" "USA" thing on quizzes that give you PLENTY OF TIME. Unless its a blitz, if you type in USA and it doesn't show up, try US. I understand where you are coming from, it just doesn't seem worth all the squawking when it takes .5 seconds to just try the other answer.

Well, there's no harm in adding as many reasonably alternates as possible. Done.

Very nice quiz. I'd like to see the three voyages listed separately though. Maybe that's just me.

How do I do that?

@peterpan55: It's because if you see USA wasn't accepted, it makes you think that the United States isn't an answer, and you stop trying it.

I agree with gameboyguy13. Why would I try US if USA doesn't work?

Great quiz! Good idea and well executed. I did some research to do with Cook recently so was quite pleased to see this. :D

@killed in Hawaii. It is thought Cook was actually killed by an Hawaiian chief named Kalanimanokahoowaha. I can't imagine why his name hasn't stood the test of time !

just googled this explorer whom I hadn't studied since grade school. What a great man he was, influential in the development of two continents and in navigation and cartography. Captain Vancouver and Captain Bligh were crew members. Plus my former Yorkshire fiancee's home was in Thornaby and we visited Roseberry Topping where Cook sought solitude. Thanks, AdamBishop.

The key is to guess a few large countries and then use the dates to figure out where he could have gone in time.

I hope I'm not the only one who thought this quiz was only for overseas voyages. I missed all of the European countries the first time through:(

@MCDD there are only overseas voyages. Tahiti, for example, is not part of mainland France but it is still not an independent country today.

Really enjoyed this! I like how you can use the dates to work out the next possible country based on distances between them.

Yeah, I was down to one and it was between Portugal and South Africa so I started guessing coastal African countries. Got it on my third guess.
