| The facts; In 1965, the white minority in Rhodesia unilaterally declared independence. The UK did not accept this but did not attempt to suppress by arms what they called a "rebellion". The UK did not, however, attempt to govern Rhodesia after 1965. No country other than South Africa acknowledged Rhodesia's independence. In 1980, the UK did oversee the transition from minority white rule, at which time the UK and the rest of the world acknowledged the independence of Zimbabwe. Now it may be that politics was the driver for no country acknowledging the reality on the ground, but there was no official recognition of independence until 1980. except by South Africa. |
