Ugh, the Enterprise - how could I forget that one? The others I missed I don't feel badly about, but Enterprise? Grr.

Definitely got the Carl Vinson because I've heard it mentioned in movies before. Can't remember the film, though.

Forgot Carl Vinson. Both the aircraft carrier, and the man. Personally, I think ships and buildings and bridges and what-not -- especially when paid for by taxpayers -- should not be named after living persons. In this regard, having your name on a US Navy ship should be like having your face on a US postage stamp; you gotta be dead first.

They should have gone back to the old names, like Yorktown, Hornet, Lexington, Intrepid, I mean what's next, naming one after Texas National Guard veteran Bush Jr? Or Obama? Clinton? I hope the madness ends after Ford, but I doubt it.

@jordanah: The dollar coin series will not have living presidents. They will have to be dead for two years prior to their scheduled release.

Strange sort of reincarnation to die and come back as an aircraft carrier.

There are only 22 aircraft carriers in service in the world. The US has 11 of them. No other country has more than 2.

Canuckster19: those WWII-era names are still being used, but for different kinds of ships. USS Yorktown was a Ticonderoga-class cruiser that was decommissioned in 2004. There have been no new ships named Hornet, Lexington or Intrepid, but many of the WWII carrier names were reused for the Ticonderoga cruisers and the various classes of amphibious assault ships.

@canuckster19 the new ford class carriers aren't being named after presidents. CVN 78 will be named after Perry O. Ford, a GMG2 who recieved the navy cross for actions while serving in Vietnam. Not Former President Gerald Ford. Names being considered for CVN 80 inclued USS Arizona and Enterprise (the current enterprise is schedualed to be decomissioned in 2013)

I don't know about later carriers, but both CVN 78 and that class of ships will be named after president Ford according to this DOD press release: http://www.defense.gov/Releases/Release.aspx?ReleaseID=10399

Uhlan: USS John F. Kennedy does exist, but it was decommissioned in 2007, and this quiz is for active US carriers only. It's currently laid up in the Philadelphia reserve fleet; it likely will eventually be turned into a floating museum or sunk as an artificial reef.

I can't believe they named one after Reagan, who served out the war in Hollywood but not Carter, who actually was a Navy man.

@kupfernick - Carter was a submariner, and thus has a Seawolf-class submarine, one of the most advanced subs in the world, named in his honor. He is also one of only a select few to be honored with a ship in his name while still living. Reagan's poor eyesight limited his ability to serve overseas; the carrier was named in his honor because of his 600-ship Navy program instituted during his presidency, part of the arms buildup that is arguably credited with ending the Cold War.

I love the fact that the navy has enough sense to name its largest vessels after conservative presidents and war heros. I can see it now....USS Barack Hussein Obama....a converted 1962 15' Falcon boat with an old 25 horse Evinrude outboard on the back, two pieces of plywood strapped on top as a deck, with a Piper Cub on top, armed with a sling-shot and water balloons! Boy! What an aircraft carrier! BTW...cost for the above mentioned USS Obama??? $50 Billion to the taxpayer! Due sometime in 2018...just as China is calling all our notes!

superspurjm - but the future USS Obama will be many times more effective at killing terrorists and ending wars than the future USS George W Bush
