For Husband and Wife, you need to accept "Mann" and "Frau" as alternate answers, as while your current answers are technically correct, Mann and Frau are by far the more commonly used versions.

I'm not sure how much it's used anymore, but "die Base" is the actual German word for female cousin (as opposed to the French Cousine).

Well, unfortunatly my school German lessons never taught me how to say I had a grandson... But a very good quiz!

@confused: well i never heard "Base" from anybody younger than 70. :) So you might wanna use "Cousine" instead.

| The word "base" is so old that it's what we call "schon nicht mehr wahr". So old that it isn't true anymore. ;)
Grandson and Granddaughter can be translated by "Enkelsohn" und "Enkeltochter" too. |

in Dutch the words for nephew and male cousin are the same, also for the female versions. Quite confusing. A second cousin wd be "achterneef" or "aftercousin".

Wild---thought it'd be a piece of cake from taking German as a little kid until I noticed I mostly knew only the words that were *outward* relations from me. I knew "Großvater" and for that matter "Opa", but had no *clue* what "grandson" would be. :P

@ confused: "Base" is an old word which the Germans don't use any longer. It was modern 20-30 years ago, I think... (Somebody may leave a comment if there are other opinions)

I'm German, and I must say I've never heard of "Base" as another word for "Cousine" before. I suppose it's so old that not even my grandma uses it anymore :)

i love the fact that varter is pronounced farter but if we went to germany and laughed at that they would think that we were crazy !!!

I think "Enkeltochter" should also be accepted for "granddaughter" (also "Enkelsohn" for "grandson", but well, it won't come up...)

Thank you for taking "Mann" and "Frau" for husband and wife. I've never used the longer forms of the words.

"Base" is about as old for female cousin as "Vetter" is for the male form.. no one uses those anymore but for the scrutiny of it i think either both should be allowed or neither
