	Great quiz. I knew that 1954 team had to be an old power from the Southeast since they'd been to so many Orange and Sugar Bowls but only one Rose Bowl.

	Mid-major bowl? #5 Michigan (Big Ten runner up) defeated #6 Nebraska (Big Eight runner up). Sounds better than most BCS matchups we currently see. Additionaly, the very next year Penn State defeated Miami for the national title in the Fiesta Bowl. Mid-major bowl indeed.

	@kkissoff-Georgia Tech's is a 1954 Cotton Bowl, not a Fiesta. The Fiesta Bowl was not a major bowl until the Southwest Conference began to fall apart and the Cotton became less prestigious. The Bowl Alliance, (the precursor to the BCS) picked the Fiesta over the Cotton in 1995 thus making it an official major bowl. Just because a bowl has a great matchup does not mean it is a major bowl. This year's Cotton bowl has better teams than 2 BCS bowls, but the Cotton is not a major bowl anymore. Late 80's Fiesta Bowls were considered major by many analysts but it was not officially a major bowl until 1995.

	Have to agree with Penie. The 1987 Fiesta Bowl was the de facto national championship game, featuring #1 Miami against #2 Penn State, and the 1989 Fiesta Bowl was again the de facto national championship game, featuring #1 Notre Dame against #3 West Virginia. The 1986 Fiesta Bowl featured #5 Michigan against #6/7 Nebraska, the 1988 Fiesta Bowl featured #3 Florida State against #5 Nebraska, the 1990 Fiesta Bowl featured #5 Florida State against #6 Nebraska, the 1992 Fiesta Bowl featured #5/6 Penn State against #10 Tennessee, and the 1993 Fiesta Bowl featured #6/9 Syracuse against #6/10 Colorado. There were certainly a lot of top ten matchups between 1986 and 1995, with a couple of national championship games to boot.

	@1906cubs Fair point there. Forgot GT played cotton bowl before the Fiesta. However, also have to realize that until the BCS, teams from certain conferences traditionally did not play in some bowls. Without the BCS Texas, Oklahoma, and Miami never would have played in all of the bowls on this list.

	@BoomRShine-All of those great match-ups came after Michigan was in the Fiesta. The earliest the Fiesta could be called a major bowl is in 87, after the Michigan game. If 87 is the benchmark then years prior cannot be grandfathered in. The Capital One Bowl gets great match-ups routinely also, if five years from now they somehow join the BCS would people be clamoring to make the 2012 Capital One Bowl a major bowl? I don't think so. The earliest I would be willing to make the Fiesta a major bowl is 87. Also the reason for those great match-ups was because the Fiesta did not have any tie ins, and back then the best teams were independent (penn st, miami, florida st, notre dame, west virginia...)

	@kkissoff-thats true, the Big Ten and Pac-12 have a huge advantage to win all the major bowls because the Rose Bowl rarely lets another conference play in the game. I think that makes the pre-BCS teams that won a rose bowl from a non-rose bowl conference even more impressive. The Rose Bowl Committee is one huge factor why a playoff system is highly unlikely, they just won't give up their bowl.

	I don't remember the Bowl Alliance's reasoning about Fiesta over Cotton, why it couldn't be added (total of 5), whether it was about a general consensus as to prestige, or payout, or record of TV ratings, or facilities, or all of the above, etc. Interested people might like to know that the source's bowl schedule page includes 2011-12 payouts. Of 30 non-BCS bowls, only 5.5 exceed $3 million team payout. The BCS bowl payouts are $17 million or $18 million. Incredible discrepancy.

	Winning a NCG at the Bowl's site should not count. They aren't playing two Sugar Bowls this year.

	@limeade: There were two main reasons the Cotton Bowl was left out originally -- 1) it was associated with a conference that had just fallen apart and was considered past its prime and 2) the old Cotton Bowl stadium was awful. Now that 1) nobody remembers the SWC, and 2) the game is played at Jerry World, maybe they should reconsider admitting the Cotton.

	@MarciniakUCF - winning the BCS Championship Game isn't being counted for the purposes of this quiz after it was spun off into it's own game in 2007. Even then, Miami is the only team on the list by virtue of a BCS CG, with the 2001 Rose Bowl being their only Rose Bowl win.
