I spent a lot of time on this quiz, so please read the following wall of text before voting it into oblivion over some minor detail:
With many of these places, it's highly debatable whether they are dependent, disputed or even non-sovereign, but the one thing they all have in common, is that none of them are UN members, and that's kinda what my goal here was: Flags you lot haven't seen before. See the status column on the right for details on each territory.
Not all of these flags are official:
St. Pierre and Miquelon, St. Barthélemy, Martinique, Mayotte, Wallis and Futuna, Guadeloupe, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, French Guiana, New Caledonia: Official flag is the French Tricolore, but the flags depicted here are widely used locally.
British Indian Ocean Territory: As civilians can't visit the BIOT, it's unclear whether the flag is actually used. It only has semi-official status.
Northern Ireland: The flag hasn't been official since 1972, but is still used by some local governments, and the N.I. national football team.
Tibet: Banned by the PRC, but still used as a symbol of the Tibetan independence movement.
Réunion: Official flag is the French Tricolore, the flag depicted here is a proposed flag.
Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha: While this is the official name of the territory, and the flag depicted here is the official flag of that territory, the flag is only used on St. Helena. Tristan da Cunha has its own flag, and Ascension uses the Union Flag. Don't ask me why.
If you have trouble seeing the small details on the flags, I included a Hi-res image where the source is supposed to be. Enjoy the quiz, and please rate and comment. |
