There are a whole lot of ethnic Germans from the Ukraine resettled there by Stalin in the 1930s and 1940s, many stayed as they couldn't move, although many of them have gone to Israel, USA and Germany now communism is dead.

This really is a bad quiz, you obviously do not mean primary speakers but anyway you miss france (alsace-lorraine) and liechtenstein...

I enjoyed this quiz although as above, Kazakhstan really surprised me. I was expecting to find at least one African country on the list. The quiz certainly would be better with a source listed.

What is your source? Much of this information is faulty. Consult CIA.

You might add Belgium and Liechtenstein as bonus answers - German is official in the latter and in several districts of the former, although obviously not enough Germans to be on the quiz otherwise. All the German-speakers got expelled from the Czech Republic (and Poland, and Latvia, and Estonia, and Romania, and Yugoslavia, and Hungary) after World War II.

Kazakhstan was not accepted as an answer and is no longer appearing on the list of most missed. The total for Germany seems to have omitted a zero. These figures seem to be native born German speakers. There are over a quarter of a million Germans living in the UK and I would imaging a few hundred thousand others that can speak German. I am sure that this would be true for several other countries (e.g. the US).

Italy is due to the Trentino-Sudtirol region having German as an official (and the majority) language.

France has a German speaking minority (actually the largest in Europe) but it doesn't recognize any minority language. Ironically the "Parisian" French was a minority language itself untill the 18th. century...

Out of interest should the US be an answer As, despite its name, Pennsylvania Dutch is derived from German.

@schumigt: The German speakers in the Netherlands aren't an official recognised minority. I'm kinda disappointed that I guessed Brazil and it isn't on here, and the fact that Vatican City is missing; Swiss Guard AND the pope...

Pretty easy... was kinda expecting there to be the one curveball answer, but it was pretty straightforward. However, looking at archived comments, apparently Kazakhstan used to be on this list?

It's hard to tell, but I think this quiz used to be less "official language" and more "commonly used language in certain areas". That's the only way I can think of any countries other than the main 6 currently listed being included.

I was desperately typing in random countries for my last entry, and was totally surprised when Belgium took. I would have figured lots of other countries more likely than that one.
