Frequently Asked Game Creation Questions
Will my quiz be selected to be featured on the front page of Sporcle?
Maybe. A variety of factors are involved in what is published on Sporcle.com..
Here are some factors that we consider:
- The quiz idea should be original.
- It should include a valid source (if applicable).
- Fits into our current cycle of quizzes.
- It has been well received as a contributed quiz.
- The quiz is topical.
Why can we only create 7 games a month?
In order to maintain Sporcle and all of its users, we had to cap game creation at seven to see how it would affect server speed and space.
In addition, we need a cap in order to sort through all of the user generated games and pick out possible candidates for publication.
How do I add a note at the top of my games?
At this point you cannot do this. You could make the first comment on the game a note about the game. This feature is on our short list of things to add.
How do I create bonus/hidden answers?
To create bonus answers in quizzes put 'ee' in the last (extra) column. This answer should also be at the bottom of the quiz (last rows).
For example if the quiz was 'Great Inventions in History', you'd want to format it like this:
Column 1 | Column 2 (Guessed Item) | Column 3
Hint | Bread
Hint | The Wheel
Hint | Beer
Hint | Sporcle | ee
NOTE:YOU MUST PUT BONUS ANSWERS AS THE VERY LAST ANSWERS IF YOU WANT THE RESULTS TO BE ACCURATE
Will contributed games show up on my Stats page?
Currently no. But it is on our list of things to add. Thanks for your patience.
Will all the quizzes be verified by Sporcle?
Not every quiz will be verified by Sporcle. Only quizzes that are selected as quizzes that might be published will be verified and checked for a valid source and accuracy before verification.
I am having problems with the tools or seeing bugs, what do I do?
The game creation tools are in Beta, so we do have some things to iron out. If you are seeing bugs, just
drop us a line.
How do I check to see if a quiz has already been made on my topic?
There are two ways.
In the create new game section when you click on the Create New Game button, use the 'Check Similar Quizzes' button.
For example if you are making a movies quiz about Tom Hanks, you would want to type in Hanks or Hanks Movies to see if that has been done already.
Additionally, you could use the 'Search for published games' field on the create games home page.
Try to be specific in the game that you create so that others will not duplicate your efforts.
Make sure that you do check before making a quiz that it has not already been done or is in progress.
I'm out of ideas, but want to contribute a game, what can I do?
How can I find games that other people have contributed if they haven't been published on the home page?
Games people have contributed show up on their profile page.
You can also have a look at the User Contributed Games page which helps to highlight
some of the games being played.
How can I do quizzes with images on them?
At this point that is not a feature available to user contributed games. It is under consideration for a feature in the future.
It is possible however that the Sporcle Admins may choose to convert a contributed quiz into an image quiz at their discretion.
I have seen quizzes with headings on them, how is that possible?
Choose the option "Group Answers with Same Hint"
The first column has to represent the heading for each answer that falls under that heading.
So, if the heading is Things That Are Blue the data should look like this
Column 1 | Column 2 (Guessed Item)
Things That Are Blue | Sky
Things That Are Blue | Blueberries
Things That Are Blue | Men in Vegas
Things That Are Blue | Jeans
I contributed my quiz, but it has errors, how can I fix it?
Edit the game and click on the 'Finish Up' tab. Click the 'Take Game Offline' button. This will allow you to make changes to the game.
After the changes have been made, return to the 'Finish Up' tab and click 'Put Game Back Online'
