Ants – Are They A Solid Or A Liquid?

Ever wonder about the viscosity of ants? Ants can flow like a liquid rearranging themselves in the group and bounce back like an elastic solid, not unlike a rubber ball.

Masses of fire ants show a duality that intrigues physicists and could have practical implications. Imagine for example self assembling robots which build themselves out of smaller bits – all inspired by a ball of ants.

In a presentation at a meeting of the American Physical Society researchers showed video of fire ants being poured out of a funnel and also springing back into a rough ball shape after being pressed down.

Let’s just hope that we don’t someday find that fire ants could also be a gas…that would be creepy.

The ad is nothing short of brilliant — and more than a little sinister. The moms start out lamenting about boys becoming men as they spy on their sons and their girlfriends on dates, but builds into a crescendo of weird with them riding laundry baskets behind cars and slithering out of couches.

Old Spice ‘Mom Song’ Commercial: Creepy, yet lovable.

You gotta love Kickstarter.

The theatrical trailer has been released for the upcoming Veronica Mars movie and it looks awesome. If you didn’t watch Veronica Mars, (first off, shame on you – you are the reason they cancelled it!) you should know that the show to this day has a very loyal fan base which famously raised $5.7 million via the crowdfunding site Kickstarter.com to get the film made.

Veronica Mars starred Kristen Bell as a teen detective investigating crimes in her hometown of Neptune, California. The new trailer has her drawn back to her hometown after murder accusations point toward her former boyfriend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) as the culprit. Oh and just in time for her ten-year high school reunion.

The Veronica Mars film will premiere in select theaters on March 14th, 2014.
