Criteria Animal Species: The Sporcle Featured Quiz of the Week

panda

We think all our featured quizzes are great, but once a week we find a quiz published within the last 7 days that went the extra mile.

This week’s quiz is Criteria Animal Species by Sporcle User mic747.

About the Quizmaker

Mic747 made this week’s Featured Quiz, and it’s his 12th game to be published. He’s been on Sporcle since January 2013, and has played over 23,000 quizzes since then. He is the curator for the Blitz and Lord of the Rings subcategories, and has 163 out of 169 badges. Keep making great quizzes, mic747!

What’s the Quiz About?

Criteria Animal Species tests your knowledge about animals. There are 12 animals to choose from, with a range from walrus to hummingbird. As with all criteria quizzes, this is a minefield. At first, you’re given a list of 12 characteristics (1 for each species), and you have to click the one animal that has all those characteristics. After you click the first one, the bottom characteristic disappears. Now you have 11 characteristics and 11 animals to choose from. And so on and so forth. For this quiz, it’s very important to read all of the characteristics before beginning. With 8 minutes to complete the quiz, you have more than enough time to think through your options. Additionally, it’s not a forced order quiz, so if you’re not sure about the current question, you can skip ahead to one you do know.

Criteria Animal Species was played 49,937 times on the day it was featured, and ended up with a rating of 3.9.

This quiz is for everyone, whether you’re not a US citizen and want to see how hard the test it, or you are already a citizen and you want to see how much you remember from US History. In the real test, you’re asked 10 questions and you must answer at least 6 of them correctly (60%). The average Sporcler got 77% of these practice questions right, so most Sporclers would pass the US Citizenship test. Would you?

Evolution of Species

by Buckler

Featured December 4, 2014

About the Quizmaker

Buckler made this week’s featured quiz, Evolution of Species, and it’s his 10th quiz to be published. He’s been on Sporcle since August 2011 and is a curator for the How I Met Your Mother, Minefield, and Logic subcategories. Since joining Sporcle in 2011, he’s played over 2600 games and has 48 badges.

What’s the Quiz About?

To get 100% on Evolution of Species, you must click the order in which different types of life forms evolved on Earth. You’re given how many years it’s been since the organism evolved, and it’s up to you to figure out what the order is. The life forms in question range from amphibians to land plants to multicellular life. With terms like this, which most people are familiar with, this quiz seems like it should be a lot easier than it is. It’s a minefield, so getting an answer wrong ends the game. Additionally, you cannot skip questions in this quiz, so even if you think you know a different answer, you can’t skip to another question. The first organism to evolve should be a given, so make sure you read all the choices before choosing one.

Evolution of Species was played 113,619(!) times while it was featured, and ended up with a rating of 3.5. Thanks for making a great quiz, Buckler.

Continents by Population

by Norwegian_dude

Featured November 28, 2014

About the Quizmaker

Norwegian_dude made the featured quiz this week, Continents by Population. This is his 4th quiz to be published, and he’s contributed 64 more quizzes. He’s been on Sporcle since May 2011 and has played more than 2,000 games since then.

What’s the Quiz About?

Continents by Population asks you to list the continents in order by population. You are able to see the population of the country and the rank. Since there are no permanent residents of Antarctica, it wasn’t included, so you have 6 continents to choose from. There are only 6 answers, how hard could it be? There are a few things that make this quiz difficult: it’s in forced order, you can’t skip to the next answer, and it’s a minefield. The combination of these features made it difficult to get 100% on this quiz. You’ll get the first few, then mess up. Then you’ll think “Oh, I should’ve put South America, not North America!” And so it goes, you’ll play this quiz again and again until you get them all right.

Continents by Population was played 48,919 times during its stay on the front page and it ended up with a rating of 4.1. Great job, Norwegian_dude!

What’s the Quiz About?

Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks is a classic quiz that asks if you know which Tom is which. You’re given a movie title and you have to enter whether Tom Cruise (C) or Tom Hanks (H) was in it. There are 26 movies, and each actor is in the quiz 13 times, so even if you have no idea, you have a 50/50 shot at getting it right. Don’t try to memorize the order or Toms, however. This quiz has random order enabled, so the movies will show up in a different order each time you take it. You have 2 minutes to get through the quiz. This is a This or That quiz, where we give you a limited number of choices to pick from. In this case, the choices are Hanks or Cruise.

Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks was played 26,392 times while it was on the front page and it has a rating of 3.9.

Missing Letter Blitz

by gunthertoody

Featured November 16, 2014

About the Quizmaker

Missing Letter Blitz is gunthertoody’s 10th published quiz, which means it earned him the Homepage Hero badge! This brings his total number of badges up to 16. He’s been a user since August 2011 and he’s played just over 4,000 quizzes since then.

What’s the Quiz About?

Missing Letter Blitz is a quiz full of four letter words. Each word has one letter missing and you have to figure out which letter of the alphabet should be there to complete the word. Each letter is used once in this quiz, so there are 26 words to figure out. This quiz is a blitz, which means that you have very little time to complete it. In this case, you have a minute and 30 seconds.

There is a nice mix of easy and challenging words, so one strategy you can use is to cycle through the words once, just getting the words that are obvious to you. This will help in the second cycle, where you have to think a bit more to figure out which letter is correct. Your choices will be narrowed down so when the timer flashes red at 10 seconds and you start frantically clicking, you’ll be more likely to get some answers right.

Missing Letter Blitz was played 31,325 times on the 16th and it has a rating of 4.2.

First 10 Countries with a McDonalds

About the Quizmaker

First 10 Countries with a McDonald’s is GeogTeacher’s 1st quiz to be published, but he’s contributed 11 other quizzes. He’s been a Sporcle user since October 2009; he was one of the first people to sign up. He’s played almost 2,000 games since then and has 33 badges. Thanks for being awesome, GeogTeacher.

What’s the Quiz About?

Can you figure out which countries had the first McDonald’s? If you can, then this quiz is for you. You’re given the year that the restaurant was first built in the country, and you have to give the country. The first country should be a given, in fact, 99.5% of users get this country right. (Hint: It’s the USA). The rest of the countries are less obvious. Some countries are far more surprising. You have 3 minutes to enter all 10 countries. This isn’t enough time to just list countries randomly. Try to be logical about which countries you’re trying. Put yourself into Ray Kroc’s mind. If you were trying to get your Big Macs in every corner of the world, where would you start?

First 10 Countries with a McDonalds was played 24,391 times while it was on the front page and it ended up with a rating of 4.3.

It’s up to you to figure out which number belongs in each box. Like with any other Logic Puzzle, there are hints to help you along the way to solving the puzzle. This quiz requires no guessing to know which number goes in each box. You also don’t need any prior knowledge to help you with the hints, just a basic understanding of arithmetic. This is a particularly tricky Logic Puzzle, with only 6.3% of people getting all the numbers right. Many users played this quiz multiple times in hopes of getting a higher score. Logic Puzzles are tricky to do but when you finally get 100%, it’s very satisfying. How many tries will it take you to figure out the logic puzzle?
