Back to Sporcle 2014: Haiku Contest

Welcome to Day 3 of Back to Sporcle Week!

Summer-is-overSad to say goodbye to summer? Drown your sorrows in Sporcle quizzes. They’re sure to cheer you up, and the self-esteem boost from memorizing the Countries of Africa is a joy known by few.

During Back to Sporcle Week, we fill you in on what transpired at Sporcle over the summer. (If you’re just joining us, check out the posts from Day 1 and 2: New Features & Sporcle’s Top Summer Games.)

But Back to Sporcle Week isn’t just about us. It’s also about YOU, our users!

sporcle haikuSporcle Haiku Contest

Last year’s haiku contest was such a success, we’re goin’ for round 2. Show off your creative chops by submitting a Sporcle-themed haiku.

What is haiku?

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry consisting of 17 syllables (also known as on or morae). There are three lines, consisting of 5, 7, and 5 syllables.  Haiku is known for juxtaposing–or placing next to each other–two  contrasting images.

There are numerous tutorials on how to write haiku, for example this one. There are no tutorials on writing a Sporcle haiku. But we’re quite friendly and accepting.

pen-and-paper-writing-9349790-2048-1536The not-so-fine print:

- Write an original haiku related in some way to Sporcle.

- Post your username and haiku in the comments section of this post

- The winning poems will be posted on the Sporcle Facebook page

Need inspiration? Check out the comments section from last year’s haiku contest.

Reddit Quiz Competition: Wrap Up

reddit

Congratulations to our Reddit Quiz Competition winner, redhed311!  The winning quiz was the clickable Refrain from Assuming. You can find the quiz with a curator pick under the Lyrics subcategory.

If, for some reason, you were hiding in a hole last week, we hosted a Reddit Quiz Competition, in which users could submit a quiz they felt worthy of a curator pick to the comments of this Reddit post. As it turns out, redhed311′s quiz was exactly what we were looking for in terms of creativity, originality, and overall fun.

It was fantastic going through all of your submissions, and we encourage you to keep sharing your quizzes on the Sporcle subredditThank you to all those who participated!

Reddit Quiz Competition!

reddit-alien

Do you remember that time when knowing what time the narwhal bacons was popular? We’re bringing it back. Well, maybe not the phrase, but the website that coined it, Reddit. For those unfamiliar with Reddit, it’s an online community where people can post pictures of cats, and then post those same pictures of cats again a few weeks later when they think no one will notice. The popularity of the links and comments posted is determined by a point system called “karma.” Users can vote posts up and down based on their relevancy to a particular subreddit. That’s where we come in! Sporcle has had its own subreddit for a while now, and in order to get this Reddit party started, we’ve decided to hold a Reddit quiz competition!

If you have had a quiz in the past that you thought was amazing, but it went unnoticed, here’s your chance to gain some recognition! You will be allowed to submit your quiz to the comments of the Reddit post describing the competition, and SporcleHQ will pick a winner based on these criteria:

1. The quiz must be posted in the comments of the Reddit post.

2. It has to be unpublished.

3. Most importantly, your quiz should be fun and original.

The competition will run from today, June 7th, until next Friday, June 14th, and the winner will receive a curator pick in the appropriate subcategory. Who knows, maybe if your quiz is up to par, it will get published. There aren’t any guidelines to the subject matter of the quiz or the quiz type. All we ask is that you keep it clean and appropriate.

We encourage you to upvote your favorite quizzes on the Sporcle subreddit and share this with your friends/fellow Sporclers to get more people involved! Good luck!

It’s time for another Photoshop contest! As Sporcle approaches the ONE BILLION play mark, we’re reminded us of all the other important moments in history. What if Sporcle was there when Martin Luther King Jr made his ‘I have a dream’ speech, when the Berlin wall came down, or when the Greeks sent their wooden horse into Troy?

    • Connect your image to the contest theme (Important Moments in History)
    • Paste your entry in the comment section (If you have problems commenting send us a note)
    • Use this source image to get started (or this one, if you’re just thinking about just using the globe.)

Prize: We’ll publish the winning image as our Facebook cover page.

Our original Photoshop contest offers some great examples of historical events, or you could draw inspiration from the most recent Sporcle at the Movies. Even if your design doesn’t get featured, it’s sure to bring some chuckles to your fellow Sporclers. Send us a message if you have any other questions.

*The dimensions for a Facebook cover photo are 815 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall. You don’t have to use these dimensions, but we may end up re-formatting your image if your entry is chosen.

The Great Sporcle Puzzle Hunt

Channel your inner Sherlock to solve the puzzle!

Editors Note: This post was written by sproutcm, who currently sits atop the Sporcle Quizmaster leaderboard, and has now devised a very difficult challenge for even the most diligent Sporclers.

Just over a year ago, I began a quest to create the first puzzle hunt made entirely out of Sporcle quizzes. It sat around unfinished for a very long time until Mother Nature decided to send a giant blizzard to Boston trapping me at home until I finished it.

The Great Sporcle Puzzle Hunt will be comprised of 15 individual puzzle quizzes: one in each of the 15 Sporcle categories. These will culminate in a two-part puzzle quiz, serving as the metapuzzle. One was released each day, for 16 days, so that everyone would have the chance to come to Sporcle, take the quizzes and solve the puzzle.

Read more below if you want more background and info on the puzzle hunt, or click here if you just want to dive right into the quizzes.
