The Curious Case of Vinny Testaverde

He's everywhere!

In our continuing series of blog posts about controversial or peculiar answers on the site, we’re going to discuss one of the most consistently included players on football-related quizzes: Vinny Testaverde.

Despite boasting a somewhat poor 90-123-1 career record and holding the dubious honor of having lead the NFL in interceptions thrown in four separate seasons, Testaverde seems to pop up on every quiz devoted to exceptional passers.

The key to Testaverde’s surprising appearances on many of these quizzes? Longevity. Testaverde’s NFL career lasted until age 44 (while starting all 16 games at age 41), including stints with seven different teams, and he’s 32nd all time in games started amongst players at any position.

Testaverde was always a pretty good player. He made the Pro Bowl in 1996 and 1998 and won the Heisman Trophy his senior year at Miami in 1986 (of course, he would throw five interceptions in the 14-10 Fiesta Bowl loss against Penn State a few weeks later, but we’ll let it slide). He was also the first pick in the 1987 NFL Draft.

Though Vinny never won a Super Bowl and probably won’t appear on many Hall of Fame ballots, he can take solace in the fact that he’s one of the most popular quarterbacks on Sporcle.
